King of Denmark from 1588 until 1648. He reigned for nearly 60 years, making him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Scandinavian history, including throughout Europe's Thirty Years' War. He is buried at Roskilde Cathedral in Copenhagen.
Before Fame
His father died when he was 10-years-old, making him heir to the throne; however, he did not officially begin his rule until age 19.
Trivia
He was obsessed with witchcraft, and persecuted more than 20 people by ordering them to be burned at the stake. He rebuilt and renamed the Norwegian capital, Oslo, as Christinia, after himself. That name was used for the capital until 1925.
Family Life
He had two wives: Anne Catherine of Brandenburg and Kirsten Munk. Between his wives and mistresses, he had more than 20 children.
