American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who, from 1981 to 1990, was the Archbishop of Detroit.
He served as chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital and K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base during the Korean War.
He was installed as the President Emeritus of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State in 1997.
He remained in Detroit to provide fatherly assistance after his retirement.
