American actor and writer best known for his roles in The Wasp Woman, Playhouse 90 and Law & Order. He also played Henry Chamberlain in the television series Guiding Light.

Before Fame

He was a classically trained actor. In 1934, he graduated from Hamilton College in 1934. He was also a student at the Stockbridge Playhouse drama school in 1935.  

Trivia

In 1947, he served as one of the hosts for writer EM Forster when Forster visited America. He later wrote a memoir essay of this time, Forster in America, and the play Passage to E. M. Forster. 

Family Life

He was gay. Before he died, he lived with his partner and writer Thomas Coley, who he wrote television scripts with.
